Excitement in Fatima as thousands await Pope Francis
Fátima (Portugal) (AFP) - Tens of thousands of Catholic faithful awaited the arrival of Pope Francis in Fatima with rising excitement Friday as the pontiff took off from Rome en route to the Portuguese holy site. Under a cloudy sky, hymns echoed across the sprawling white esplanade that faces the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima as pilgrims from all over the world prayed, sang or sat in silence. From a rainy morning that saw a spattering of pilgrims join those who had spent the night at the Catholic shrine, the giant esplanade progressively filled up with groups from countries as varied as China, Venezuela and East Timor, some of them proudly waving giant flags.

Bomb kills 25 as it hits convoy of the Pakistan Senate deputy
By Gul Yusufzai QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - A bomb exploded next to a convoy of the deputy chairman of the Pakistan Senate on Friday in the violence-plagued province of Baluchistan, killing at least 25 people, officials said. At least 35 people were wounded in the blast near the town of Mastung, 50 km (30 miles) from the provincial capital of Quetta. Senator Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, the deputy chairman of the upper house of parliament, told Reuters minutes after the explosion he believed he was the target and he had sustained minor injuries.
