Times Square driver charged with murder
A US Navy veteran who plowed a car into pedestrians in New York's Times Square, killing a woman and injuring 22 other people, has been charged with murder and attempted murder, police said Friday. Richard Rojas, 26, a former Navy electrician from the Bronx, was arrested at the scene and later charged with one count of murder in the death of an 18-year-old tourist and with 20 counts of attempted murder. Shortly before noon Thursday, Rojas's Honda Accord suddenly hurtled onto a Seventh Avenue sidewalk in Times Square -- one of the world's busiest districts -- and continued on for three blocks, bowling over pedestrians and sending others fleeing in fright, police said.
Russia slams 'illegitimate' US coalition strikes on Syrian forces
Russia on Friday condemned a strike by the US-led coalition against Syrian pro-regime forces as "illegitimate" and said it could harm efforts to fight Islamic State jihadists. "It is illegitimate, unlawful and yet another gross violation of Syria's sovereignty," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in televised comments while on a trip to Cyprus. US-led warplanes on Thursday carried out a strike in the east of the country against a convoy of pro-government forces which were heading towards a remote coalition garrison near the border with Jordan.

By Jonathan Allen NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy recruit who drove his car along a crowded Times Square sidewalk, killing a young woman and injuring many others, is due to appear in court in Manhattan on Friday to face charges of murder, attempted murder and vehicular homicide. Richard Rojas, 26, knocked pedestrians into the air as he sped for three blocks in his burgundy Honda sedan through one of the city's busiest areas on Thursday before crashing into a metal stanchion, the New York Police Department said. Rojas, who is from the Bronx area of New York City, had been arrested twice for drunken driving, in 2008 and 2015, and once this month on a charge of menacing for threatening another man with a knife, police said.
City mistakenly honors man suspected of killing officer
CINCINNATI (AP) — The mayor of Cincinnati has tearfully apologized to city police after his office unwittingly approved a proclamation honoring a man suspected of killing an officer in an ambush.
